Time flies by so fast; it’s already the new year. Happy New Year to all my readers. First, I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read my blogs over the past year. It has meant the world to me for people to have a little more information on their journey to Panama through my experiences, and I hope I’ve been helpful in your finding a place, activity, or just more information on living in Panama City.
If you didn’t know, I moved back to my hometown of Richmond, VA, where I’m figuring out my blogging niche. I’m figuring out how I can contribute to the Richmond experience through the world of travel and multiculturalism in Richmond and the surrounding areas, including food, activities, music, and other random things I may encounter.
While I have many blogs to catch up on, I hope to do that in the first quarter of the year. But first, let’s dive into the thing that is on everyone’s mind at the beginning of the year… You guessed it – health and weight loss! (Let’s all moan in unison)
I have to admit, wintertime and staying active – I haven’t mastered it at all! (as I side-eye my empty bowl of potato chips I just finished eating). I write this blog not really for you but for me… well, us. Finding new ways to enjoy moving our bodies and connect with ourselves can be a challenge. While I will only list non-typical activities in RVA because we all have gym memberships that we sometimes use but not really, I will also mention how to connect with friends this season through fitness.

First, I want to state that learning how your mind and body enjoy moving will benefit you greatly. You might be saying, “Yo, my body doesn’t like to move.” However, I would beg to differ. It just might take some trial and error.
Also, figure out how seasons affect your mind and body. For example, in warmer weather, I’m more likely to want to run outdoors and hopefully with a small group. In warmer weather, I’m more likely to walk more in general as well. In colder weather, I’m more likely to want to do more indoor activities like yoga, Pilates, Zumba, etc. I enjoy working out with others more than solo. I don’t enjoy lifting weights but prefer doing more home-like activities to strengthen my body.
Think about these, as well as your budget, as I list some local places to work out that are not the boring gym!
The Local Workout List

1. Hour Cycle Studio
This is a black-owned cycling studio that will have you sweating and wanting to tweak or praise and worship depending on the day you go. The studio is located near the Jackson Ward in Downtown Richmond.
Starting cost: $15-22
2. Boho Studios
This place is one of those studios that has the super peppy guy or gal motivating you to complete the many varieties of workouts they offer, from HIIT, cycling, yoga, and a mixed workout they call Fit. In the end, you secretly like they were motivating you so happily as you were slowly dying – well, if that sounds like you, then check out one of their 3 locations around RVA and find the closest one to you.
Starting cost: $28
3. Endorphasm
Wow! What a name. Well, this studio is for people who love a HIIT workout. I personally love HIIT workouts for the variety they offer, however, they always leave my body feeling like jello, also questioning my life in a good way. This studio is located in Chesterfield County. No need to venture to the city if you don’t need to.
Starting cost: $30
4. Dodgeball
Meet-up is pretty popular in RVA, and if you want to sweat and make friends, sign up for a Medic dodgeball team.
Cost: $5
5. Baresoulyoga

This black-owned yoga studio is warm and welcoming. Honestly, it was my first time having a black yoga instructor, which I never realized until after my yoga session. This space is a warm and safe space for multicultural bodies to bend, stretch, and meditate.
Starting cost: $35
6. Peak Experiences
This is for people who want to learn a new skill or overcome a fear of heights. This place is for rock climbing. Rock climbing always gives a rush of “Oh Shit” and “Yay I did it!” I always think this fitness activity would be fun for couples to start together, but that might be the many rom-com movies I’ve watched over the past 30 years. They have 2 locations; find the closest to you.
Starting cost: $23.
7. Richmond Urban Dance
Dancing is always so fun. It took me a while to dance without a care in front of people and just have fun, and the Richmond Urban Dance studio is one of those places to learn new moves and just have fun.
Starting Cost: $18
8. RVA Swing

This is a dance world I never knew existed until a new friend I made introduced me to this fun way to move your body. If you want to learn the world of swing dances, check this group and studio out.
Starting cost: $30.
While there are many more ways I haven’t highlighted to move your body, I hope you decide this winter to check out these local places to strengthen your mind, body, and maybe even your soul. Take the start of this year to learn and study how to motivate yourself to move, play, and even dance this year. The gym isn’t the only way to love on your body in RVA.
